A Review: STAR TREK: YEAR FIVE #3

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of STAR TREK: YEAR FIVE #3 from IDW Publishing. The story is written by Brandon Easton; with art by Martin Coccolo, colors by Fran Gamboa, and lettering by Neil Uyetake.

The Enterprise on its way home from completing its five year mission, has dropped out of warp for some work on the nacelles. They detect an unusual warp signature and investigate only to find out they are nearby Sigma Iotia II. Further investigation reveals what has happened since their last visit to the planet and where Doctor McCoy left his communicator. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy witness how that one action has changed the destiny of this planet. Can they repair the damage that has been done without violating the Prime Directive…again???

This story is a follow up to the classic Trek episode “A Piece of the Action.” Brandon Easton provides an entertaining script that feels like it would fit perfectly in the television series. The subplot of the Tholians that began with the first issue has been interesting, especially after the development of this issue. Martin Coccolo and Fran Gamboa take over art and colors with this story arc, and do a real good job. Fans of the original Enterprise crew should be reading this book. If you’re not, it’s not too late to beam on board. It captures the feel of the classic series very well.
