A Review: SAVAGE TALES VAMPIRELLA ONE-SHOT

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of SAVAGE TALES VAMPIRELLA ONE-SHOT from Dynamite Entertainment. Erik Burnham writes, Anthony Marques, J. Bone, Fernando Ruiz and Daniel Hdr draw, Mohan colors, and Tom Napolitano letters.

Vampirella awakens in a strange land, and is immediately attacked by barbarians. Weird, but Vampi is used to weird. The warriors are strong and fast, but she quickly realizes they’re being mind controlled. She dispatches them and tracks the “wizard” back to a seemingly idyllic city, and has a bit of a showdown with the city’s ruler.

There’s a lot of blood and gore in this story (not surprising) but it doesn’t read like horror (a bit more surprising). The flavor is more high fantasy, and it works very well. Vampi fits into a setting like this effectively, even if her narration betrays her modernity. And the art is phenomenal, giving us that high-fantasy setting without leaning heavily on flashy “magic” effects.

This is a very appealing Vampirella story in a beautiful setting, and it works nicely as a one-shot. And it also comes with an interestingly similar backup story, reprinted from Savage Tales. Definitely a cool book, and a fun intro to Vampi if you need one.

SAVAGE TALES VAMPIRELLA ONE-SHOT is available now from your local comic shop, or online at dynamite.com.
