A Review: JEEPERS CREEPERS #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of JEEPERS CREEPERS #1 from Dynamite Entertainment. The story is written by Marc Andreyko; with art by Kewber Baal, colors by Jorge Sutil, and lettering by Taylor Esposito.

Devon James has traveled to Mexico to work on his thesis regarding appearances of “the dragon” in North America from the age of the Aztecs to current day. He sneaks away from a tour group to enter the Temple of the Feathered Serpent (which is forbidden). Our hero is busted by the police, but released under the condition that he never returns. As he leaves, he is given a mysterious gift, which gets the attention of a certain entity…

I know this property has a sordid past due to the writer/director of the films, but don’t hold that against this book. Marc Andreyko is a great writer, and he delivers a great setup issue. Maybe the only complaint is the length of the flashback, but it was important setup of the Creeper mythology (and this story). Baal and Sutil certainly captured the look and feel of the movies while adding their own style; not an easy thing to accomplish. A nice start to what could be an interesting series. Check it out.

JEEPERS CREEPERS #1 is in stores now or available at www.dynamite.com.
