A Review: SINERGY #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of SINERGY #1 from Image Comics. Michael Avon Oeming and Taki Soma write, draw and color.

Jess is having a moment with her boyfriend, at least until he changes right before her eyes. Her dad overreacts, of course, but it seems that there might be more to it than that. It seems that, unbeknownst to Jess and her mom, Dad is a monster hunter. And now Jess has manifested the same ability to see the monsters that Dad has. Going off to college might just have to wait a while.

This issue has a ton of foreshadowing in it, and it’s hard to talk about it without spoilers. That it has so many hints, though, is a big reason to like it; there’s a whole lot of cool stuff going on in Jess’s world, especially if you’re into monsters and teenagers (yeah, it’s got a bit of a Buffy vibe to it, which I like). Artistically it works well, though for me it’s the coloring that really stands out. It gives the feeling of light filters in movies, which helps set the mood in each scene.

So if you’re into well-constructed stories, family drama and/or monster violence, you should definitely be reading this book. It’s a lot of fun and there’s a lot of potential here.

SINERGY #1 is available now at your FLCS or at imagecomics.com.
