A Review: BIRTHRIGHT #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of BIRTHRIGHT #1 from Image Comics. Joshua Williamson writes, Andrei Bressan draws and Adriano Lucas colors.

The Rhodes family has had a really rough time of it this past year. Their young son Mikey disappeared without a trace, the dad was accused of killing him, and their relationships were strained beyond the breaking point. But now there’s a new twist in the case – a man has appeared, in full fantasy warrior get-up, claiming to be the lost Mikey. Only Dad believes him, and no one has any idea what his motives are.

The disappearance of a child is a very dark starting point, but it’s one with a ton of emotional story potential. On top of that, we get a whole fantasy world to explore and/or an “assimilating back into society” story. And “Mikey” may have something else going on (no spoilers!). The art varies from gritty emotional outbursts to beautiful panoramic views of Terrenos, and that whole spectrum is done exceptionally well.

Sword and sorcery meets dark, real-world drama. Mysteries about what happened a year ago clash with mysteries about what will happen now. This issue is a fantastic start to what will certainly be a gut-wrenching (and heart-wrenching) series.

BIRTHRIGHT #1 is available now at your FLCS or at imagecomics.com.
