A Review: VAMPIRELLA #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of VAMPIRELLA #1 from Dynamite Entertainment. The story is written by Nancy A. Collins, with pencils by Patrick Berkenkotter, inks by Dennis Crisostomo, colors by Jorge Sutil, and lettering by Rob Steen.

Vampirella is called in to find a girl who has been kidnapped by her father. This doesn’t sound like something that needs her expertise until she finds out that the father changed his name to…Ethan Shroud. After learning more about the cult “Ethan” heads, she finds them at a cemetery. What does he have planned for the girl, and will our heroine be in time to stop them? Just what exactly is this cult trying to accomplish?

If I’m not mistaken, this is Nancy Collins’ first Vampirella story.  Given her background in horror and her own creation (the vampire/vampire killer Sonja Blue), this seems to be a no-brainer choice. And you would be right. It appears that Ms. Collins is playing up the investigator aspect of the character, yet also deal with Vampy’s moral tightrope between hero and demon (especially given what happens in this issue). I find that amazingly cool. Berkenkotter’s art is beautiful and deadly at the same time, awesome combination and appropriate for this title. Check this book out!
