A Review: THE BLOOD QUEEN #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of THE BLOOD QUEEN #1 from Dynamite Entertainment. Troy Brownfield writes, Fritz Casas draws, and Mark Roberts and Kirsty Swan color.

The King’s baby daughter has fallen ill, and he has sent for the greatest healer in the land. Elizabeth’s skill is impressive, and she soon determines that the princess has been cursed, and the culprit is nearby. Elizabeth’s quick thinking cures the child, and as a reward she’s given exactly what she wants. Her plans are ready to be set in motion.

With this issue Dynamite begins a new fantasy tale, and one that seems likely to turn toward horror before it’s over. Elizabeth is an interesting protagonist; she seems to know more than she lets on, and she hints at things that don’t seem to fit into courtly society. Her youth and beauty are mentioned several times also, so we’ll see where that goes. The art, and especially the color, really help bring that out as well.

I’m really excited that publishers are starting to realize how well fantasy works in comics. This is a great first issue for a thrilling new series.

THE BLOOD QUEEN #1 is available now at your FLCS or at dynamite.com.
