A Review: THE STAR WARS #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of THE STAR WARS #1 from Dark Horse Comics. The script is by J.W. Rinzler, adapted from the original rough-draft screenplay by George Lucas. The art is by Mike Mayhew, colors by Rain Beredo, and lettering by Michael Heisler.

A mysterious stranger lands on the fourth moon of Utapau. Kane Starkiller and his sons Annikin and Deak confront him via lightsabers. Our heroes then take off to the planet Aquilae to reunite with an old friend and fellow Jedi, General Luke Skywalker. Meanwhile on Alderaan, the Emperor announces his plans to attack the rebellious planet Aquilae to complete the Galactic Empire and bring peace to the galaxy. Or so he says…

I’ve been waiting for this book to come out since it was announced earlier this year. I was not disappointed. Some names and locations may be familiar to fans, but this is a different STAR WARS. There’s some action, but mainly a lot of world building in this issue, which is fine. The action and adventure will be here soon enough. I must mention the beautiful art by Mike Mayhew. Each page is incredible to look at. It's worth picking up whether you’re a fan of the films (and curious to see where the story we know and love came from) or science fiction in general.

THE STAR WARS #1 is in stores now or available for ordering at www.DarkHorse.com.
