A Review: CLUE: CANDLESTICK #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of CLUE: CANDLESTICK #1 from IDW Publishing. The story is written, illustrated, and lettered by Dash Shaw.

Professor Plum receives a coded message from Mr. Boddy. In the message, it is revealed that he had been receiving death threats, and invites Plum to come to his manor to settle the estate with him and others: Colonel Mustard, Mr. Green, Miss Scarlett, and Mrs. Peacock. During dinner, a rather unusual conversation is being held when the cook (Mrs. White) is asked to bring in a chest that contains unique (and deadly) items. As if things weren’t intense enough, someone is murdered… But who is responsible, and who is next?

I rather enjoyed the first CLUE miniseries IDW released, and was interested in what was coming with this new book. Dash Shaw takes the classic game and gives it a unique spin, and I’m not sure what to think about it. I like the different visual style he brought to the tale, and he presents the characters some rather interesting thoughts and voices. I’m not saying that’s bad, just a different take and that’s okay. I’m sure I missed some clues and hints in the issue that would lead to the identity of the murder(s), and I’ll kick myself later when all is revealed. All in all an interesting start to what could be a grand mystery. Check it out.
