A Review: STAR TREK YEAR FIVE #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of STAR TREK YEAR FIVE #1 from IDW Publishing. The story is written by Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly; with art by Stephen Thompson, colors by Charlie Kirchoff, and lettering by Neil Uyetake.

The Enterprise is in the middle of an assignment when they detect what seems to be a distress signal of Tholian origin. They arrive to Lloyd Zeta-9 where they find no life…or so they believe. And what news has Kirk thinking hard about the future?

The final adventures of the original five year mission are being told and this issue starts it off with a bang. The sequence between Kirk and McCoy was interesting. The writers (correctly) feel that Kirk was always leery about taking the promotion to Admiral because it would take him away from being out in space…and away from the Enterprise. Hopefully the series will deal with the other crew members thoughts and plans about moving on. Lanzing and Kelly deliver a story that feels like it belongs in the TOS universe. Stephen Thompson does a nice job capturing the likeness of the actors while adding his style at the same time. This should be a fun series and needs to be in every Trek fans’ hands.
