A Review: MODERN ANIMALS

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of MODERN ANIMALS from Fifth Dimension Comics. David M. Brown writes, D.N.S. draws and colors, and Mira Mortal letters.

This is the story of a regular guy and his friend trying to have a good time. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? But it’s the 1980s, and the guys are working in low-budget porn (for gangsters, really). And “a good time” involves a ton of drugs, a pair of morally questionable sisters, and being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Just getting by was a whole different game in the excess of the ‘80s, that’s for sure.

It’s not a horror story, at least not in the traditional sense. But there are some horrible things going on in this tangled web of a story. There’s a lot of the worst of people coming through, ranging from really creepy to downright brutal and nasty. And it all weaves together nicely. The art is top-notch as well, adding more than a little of that sense of brutality that flows throughout.

Modern Animals is being sold via Kickstarter, and these guys have used it before and know how to make it work. If you’re into stories with scuzzballs on the fringes of organized crime, sex & violence, and brilliant indie art, go get this book.

MODERN ANIMALS is available now through the Kickstarter campaign (open until March 16), in both digital and physical form.
