A Review: 2000 AD 40th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of 2000 AD 40th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL from 2000AD. Creators include John Wagner, Carl Critchlow, Al Ewing, Henry Flint, Pat Mills, Clint Langley, Lauren Beukes, Dale Halvorsen, Carlos Ezquerra, Simon Davis, Robbie Morrison and Simon Fraser.

Judge Dredd finds a simple pool of blood; is it murder? Zombo stops a terrorist insurgence, but that’s not all that stops. The Ro-Busters are getting played, but by whom? Durham Red is being well paid to take out a group of insurgents, but finds a better payday. A young Slaine is tested, and learns when not to fight. And Nikolai Dante is in the right place at the right time after all, spiders or no spiders.

It’s been 40 years since 2000 AD started publishing comics, and their creations are some of the best known in the world. This 60+ page special issue does a delightful job of showcasing some of those creations. Each of these stories is a self-contained tale demonstrating the range of the creators and the stories themselves. And the interlude pages are worth checking out by themselves.

As short as these stories are, each of them is entertaining in its own way (some dark, some not so dark). This special is a testament to 40 years of hard-working, hard-partying comics. It’s a great sampling for newbies and a very good collection for veterans of 2000 AD comics.

2000 AD 40th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL is available now from your local comic shop, or online at 2000adonline.com.
