A Review: THE BLACK MONDAY MURDERS #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of THE BLACK MONDAY MURDERS #1 from Image Comics. Jonathan Hickman writes, Tomm Coker draws, Michael Garland colors, and Rus Wooton letters.

Theo is a good detective – maybe a little too good. He’s riding a desk (thanks to a recent incident) until his captain hands him a weird case, the kind he’s strangely good at. A banker is found dead in what looks like a kinky accident, but Theo sees it for what it is – some kind of ritual murder. And the dead guy’s bank has a long and storied history of weird secrets.

This is a double-sized issue that’s just packed with awesome backstory. Caina (the bank) has certainly found an interesting way to survive the generations, but I don’t want to get into spoilers about it. That this story dabbles in the occult and conspiracy theory like it does piques my interest for sure, and the art is gritty and real in a way that keeps it all together.

I love how this book goes about building a rich history in just a few pages, and then threatens to bring it all down with the wrong cop in the right place. I’m really looking forward to this one.

THE BLACK MONDAY MURDERS #1 is available now at your FLCS or at imagecomics.com.
