Halloween ComicFest 2015 Reviews

Halloween ComicFest is coming up, and The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain copies of this year’s selections. Here are a few reviews of the twenty-one comics that will be available…

1. ACTIONVERSE (ACTION LAB ENTERTAINMENT)
(W) Jamal Igle, Vito Delsante, Scott Fogg, various (A) Ray-Anthony Height, Rosy Higgins, Ted Brandt, various

The heroes of the Actionverse are about to finally meet in this preview to ACTIONVERSE #0. Also included is the introduction to a new hero Action Lab: Dog Hero! And finally, an Actionverse character handbook with a breakdown of history, powers, and other data no fan can do without.

Action Lab Entertainment is about ready to unleash its united Superhero universe and I can’t wait. The solo stories (Molly Danger, Stray, and Midnight Tiger to name a few) have been great. This will whet your appetite until the new book comes out!

2. DOCTOR STRANGE: THE OATH (MARVEL)
(W) Brian K. Vaughan (A) Marcos Martin

While the Night Nurse tries to save his life, Doctor Strange recounts how he came to be the Sorcerer Supreme. But who is responsible for the Doctor’s current condition and what was the reason?

With a new series and live action movie on the way, Marvel gets you ready by representing the opening chapter to mini-series by the writer who brought you Y: THE LAST MAN and SAGA. Worth checking out.

3. BOOM! STUDIOS HALLOWEEN HAUNT 2015 (BOOM!)
(W) Jones Wiedle, Jeremy Sorese, Noelle Steveson, and Shannon Watters (A) Jones Wiedle, Coleman Engle, Brittney Williams and Felicia Choo

“Adventure Time: Costume Party” – The Ice King shows up to Jake and Finn’s party unannounced; “Steven Universe: Wild Animals” – Ameythyst decides to try things out as different animals; “Lumberjanes: Taily Po” – The horrible tale of the Taily Po is recounted around the campfire.

These are cute little stories that fans of the cartoon series should enjoy. Not a fan of the shows, but these tales were enjoyable.

4. SPOOK-A-RAMA (FAMOUS MONSTERS)
(W) Philip Kim (A) Rick Kolowski

Cory loves Horror movies and creating monsters. He sees an opportunity to meet the legendary Wilbur Atchison and tour Atchison Studios. What he finds out will change his world…

This is a well told, but not all that original story. Fans of the famous magazine will most notice who Atchison resembles (nice touch). I’m curious to read more about this one.

5. CHAKRA THE INVINCIBLE HALLOWEEN SPECIAL (GRAPHIC INDIA)
(W) Ashwin Pande (A) Brittney L. Williams, Anderson Mahanski, Dave Bardin, Thiago Vale
India’s first superhero must do what it takes to battle the likes of Blue Banshee, The Costume Caliph, Red Preyt, Sludge Beast, and Blobby to save his home of Mumbai!

Chaka is co-created by Stan Lee, and the stories within this issue are right in the vein of his classic creations. Action and adventure wrapped up in an all-ages book that will make anyone a fan.

6. WORLD OF ARCHIE HALLOWEEN SPECIAL (ARCHIE COMICS)
(W) George Galdir (A) Fernando Ruiz

Archie and Jughead (dressed as vampires) missed out on Veronica’s Halloween party. However, they are invited to another party…attended by REAL MONSTERS!!!!

C’mon, it’s Archie! You know what to expect: fun, light-hearted humor with a nice little story and art. Everyone should enjoy this classic group of characters.

7. BITTEN (MAGNETIC PRESS)
(W) Raul Garcia; based off the book YOUNG WEREWOLF by Cornelia Funke (A) Francisco Herrera

Coming home from the movies, Matt’s life is turned into a real horror film! Won’t ANYTHING go right for him?

I wish there was a little more to this preview. Frankly there’s not enough to decide one way or another. I do like Francisco Herrera’s style, so that might sway me to look into this title a little further.

8. YO-KAI WATCH (PERFECT SQUARE)
(W & A) Noriyuki Konishi (original story and supervision by Level-5 Inc.)

A boy named Nate Adams releases a creature called the Whisper from imprisonment. In gratitude, he gives Nate a watch that releases creatures that he can only see. A then the adventure begins…

Manga isn’t my strong suit, but this was a little fun preview to the upcoming collections. This one is geared more for an all-ages audience, which is never a bad thing. Got to start them young!

9. FRAGMENTS OF HORROR (VIZ MEDIA)
(W &A) Junji Ito

Tomio must pay the price for cheating on Madoka with the mysterious Fortune Teller. Will he live long enough to make amends with his fiancé?

This manga is NOT for the kiddies, but it’s a great creepy story for this time of the year. Ito’s art is impressive. I’m seriously thinking about getting the anthology. It’s that good.

That's just a small batch of this year's crop. So head out to your favorite local comic shop, pick up some goodies and have a Happy Halloween!!
