A Review: BLACK MAGICK #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of BLACK MAGICK #1 from Image Comics. Greg Rucka writes, Nicola Scott draws, Chiara Arena assists with colors, and Jodi Wynne letters.

Rowan Black is a cop, so she’s not surprised to get a call in the middle of her coven’s circle. This case is a little weird, though; a guy with hostages asking specifically for her. She doesn’t know him, but he trades the hostages for her. And then he starts talking. He knows things about her that he shouldn’t, and he admits he’s being controlled. She tries to save him but can’t, though she learns enough to know that something is coming.

Detective Black comes from a long line of witches, and as witch and cop she seems to have a pretty good idea how things work. This episode rattles her, though, which makes for a cool start to the story. She’s way out of her comfort zone, and it’s done in a way that tells us a lot about her. And the stunning art shows us a lot about her too. Black & white art done well is just fantastic, and this book is definitely done well.

This is truly a beautiful book, and you can count on Greg Rucka to bring a compelling story every time. This one’s really got me excited.

BLACK MAGICK #1 is available now at your FLCS or at imagecomics.com.
