A Review: DEEP GRAVITY #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of DEEP GRAVITY #1 from Dark Horse Comics. Story is by Mike Richardson, script is by Gabriel Hardman and Corinna Bechko, and art is by Fernando Baldo.

The planet Poseidon is a three-year trip each way. It’s loaded with resources, though, so it’s worth the trip. Steven’s reason for joining the mission is a bit suspect – he’s still carrying a torch for Michelle, who served on the last tour. But what will he do when the worst possible scenario unfolds before him?

This is a really well built first issue, with story possibilities ranging from high-powered corporate politics down to interpersonal conflicts. Steven is a likeable guy, and he’s not the only one. Michelle is a bit callous, but her perspective is valid. And then there’s poor Greg, but I’ll avoid the spoiler. And the art is just wonderful, handling space panoramas, face-to-face conversations and alien flora and fauna with equal aplomb.

If you’re into (or looking for) great drama in a hard SF setting, you can’t do better than pick up this book. It’s built to keep being good for a long time.

DEEP GRAVITY #1 is available now at your FLCS or at darkhorse.com.
