A Review: BLACK MARKET #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of BLACK MARKET #1 from BOOM! Studios. Frank J. Barbiere writes, Victor Santos draws and Adam Metcalfe colors.

Ray’s world has supers, but not everyone loves them. Many worship them, but not Ray. Ray is a normal guy who’s looking for a miracle to save his Shannon. Ray’s brother Denny has gotten him into trouble before – kind of a habitual offender type. But when he comes to Ray with the promise of a cure for Shannon, Ray can’t bring himself to refuse, despite the moral implications of said cure.

And what a cool moral implication it is, too. This first issue does an impressive job of weaving a tangled web of a story. Already we get a glimpse of how conflicted Ray is, we can tell that Shannon won’t like it if/when she finds out, and how delightfully evil Biochem can be. And the art switches seamlessly back and forth between action scenes and people in a room talking.

How far is too far to go? How does society view the supers that protect it? How long before Ray’s conscience kicks in – if at all? We’ll just have to keep reading this one, won’t we?

BLACK MARKET #1 is available now at your FLCS or at boom-studios.com.
