A Review: THE WITCHER #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of THE WITCHER #1 from Dark Horse Comics. Paul Tobin writes, Joe Querio draws and Carlos Badilla colors.

Jakob is a hunter who chances to meet a witcher called Geralt in the woods. Jakob has a problem – his wife Marta has been turned into a vampire. Jakob wants to leave, and Geralt offers to travel with him, but the forest is teeming with things that don’t want either of them to get away. But maybe Marta has something to say about that.

This book is based on the popular video game, but it’s not necessary to be familiar with the game to enjoy the book. Geralt is an interesting, enigmatic character, and Jakob is an everyman with a metaphorical skeleton in his closet. Throw in some mythical creatures from eastern Europe and some beautifully dark, almost Gothic art and the result is a fantasy-horror blend that really works.

If you’re into monster slayers and dark fantasy, you’ll want to check out this title. Same deal if you’re a fan of the game. It’s certainly worth looking into.

THE WITCHER #1 is available now at your FLCS or at darkhorse.com.
