A Review: MAGNUS: ROBOT FIGHTER #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of MAGNUS: ROBOT FIGHTER #1 from Dynamite Entertainment. Fred Van Lente writes, Cory Smith draws and Mauricio Wallace colors.

Russell Magnus is a history teacher and coach in a small Colorado town. He’s got a great life – happily married and expecting, great job, great relationship with the town’s AI. But then the robots appear in town, and when it’s all over Russell wakes up in a futuristic megacity with no idea what’s going on. All he wants to do is get home, but that might be harder than he anticipates.

This is a reboot of the series started in the 1960s, and it has been rebooted several times before. This version makes a few little changes, though, and it makes the story a bit more accessible (or at least less strange). And it starts off with great motivation for Magnus to fight – to get back to his family. Good story and gorgeous art bring out a bunch of potential.

Nice guy with amazing martial arts abilities loses everything and fights to get it back. Sounds like a cool story to me; go pick it up.

MAGNUS: ROBOT FIGHTER #1 is available now at your FLCS or at dynamite.com.
