A Review: MONSTERS! & OTHER STORIES

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of MONSTERS! & OTHER STORIES from Dark Horse Books. Gustavo Duarte writes, draws and colors.

A farmer is abducted by aliens and goes through some changes. Two co-workers attempt to avoid their own fate, only to find that it’s not that easy. Monsters attack the city, and a bartender has to take extreme measures to stop the destruction. These stories are compiled here in this first book by an up-and-coming Brazilian creator.

Any time you can find a book which combines horror and comedy to the extent this one does, you’ve hit the jackpot. It’s equal parts creepy and hilarious, and that it can do that without any dialogue at all (okay, a chicken caws at one point) makes it that much more impressive. The stories are told completely through the visual aspect, and you really don’t miss the words at all. It’s brilliantly done, and it should be studied by comics artists and writers alike (not to mention reviewers).

I know it’s early, but this could very well be one of the best comic books of the year. If you enjoy comics, and if you want to make comics, go get this book and read it a lot.

MONSTERS! & OTHER STORIES is available now at your FLCS and bookstores, and online at darkhorse.com.
