A Review: SHERLOCK HOLMES: MORIARTY LIVES #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of SHERLOCK HOLMES: MORIARTY LIVES #1 from Dynamite Entertainment. David Liss writes, Daniel Indro draws, and Josan Gonzalez colors.

Our story begins at Reichenbach Falls, the infamous location of the final battle between Sherlock Holmes and his nemesis, Professor Moriarty. We are uncertain about the fate of Holmes, but Moriarty has escaped by swimming down the river. Once acquiring dry clothes, he attempts to get a meal at a local tavern. However, he manages in short order to annoy a powerful mystic, inherit a young boy and get the local authorities on his trail.

Moriarty is an iconic character from the Conan Doyle stories, and Dynamite has recently started playing around with him – in a totally good way, that is. Their version is just as much a genius as Holmes, and as cruel as Holmes is noble. Having a villain in the leading role can make for a fun story, too, and this looks to be the beginning of a very interesting one.

The Professor is out on his own, with no Holmes at his heels and the freedom to do as he pleases. The potential for delightful mayhem runs high in this series. I can’t wait to see more.

SHERLOCK HOLMES: MORIARTY LIVES #1 is available now at your FLCS and online at dynamite.com.
