A Review: ASH AND THE ARMY OF DARKNESS #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of ASH AND THE ARMY OF DARKNESS #1 from Dynamite Comics. Steve Niles writes and Dennis Calero draws.

Ash has returned to his normal life, working at S-Mart, and everything seems to be back to normal. Of course, appearances can be deceiving, and he wasn’t all that sure he read the incantation right, anyway. It turns out that he’s been betrayed, and it will take all of his strength and all of his cool to make things right this time.

This picks up and reads a lot like a sequel to the last movie, which is fine by me (and most fans, I’m betting). And I can’t think of anyone else I would entrust it to than Steve Niles. If horror/comedy was its own subgenre, Niles would be the crown prince. Calero’s art is very nice as well, pulling off horror violence and fantasy undead with equal skill.

After the Evil Dead film remake, it’s easy to get excited about a return to the style of the original movies. And this book delivers, in that regard and otherwise. Definitely grab this one.

ASH AND THE ARMY OF DARKNESS #1 is available now at your FLCS and online at dynamite.com.
