A Review: THUMBPRINT #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of THUMBPRINT #1 from IDW Publishing. Jason Ciaramelia writes, and Vic Malhotra draws. It’s based on a novella by Joe Hill.

Mal is an Iraq vet back from the war, but isn’t really settling back in all that well. She saw some stuff, you know? Then she finds the blank letter with the thumbprint in her mailbox. It freaks her out a bit, partly because it seems familiar. Brings back some memories. The second one doesn’t help. But what can she do?

I’m not familiar with the Hill story. That said, there are some very interesting story elements here. Mal is a good character; she’s puzzled and uncertain, and that makes her uncomfortable, just like it would any of us. The military trained her to react quickly and efficiently, and she can’t do that in this situation. The art is having an effect on the story too, using limited color and detail. The flashback scenes are really cool in that style.

My feelings toward Mal are conflicted, and that’s the sign of a well-written character. I really want to know what happens to her. This is a book worth checking out, especially if you love a good story.
