A Review: AKANEIRO #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of AKANEIRO #1 from Dark Horse Comics. Justin Aclin writes and Vasilis Lolos draws.

Kani is a rambunctious girl in a village full of spiritualists. She has all but rejected her life and her home when it is attacked by a yokai monster, a demonic beast that sometimes appears on their island. After she helps to kill the beast, politics kicks in and she joins the Red Hunters, those sworn to fight these monsters. But to join the order, there are tests, and not all of them are given by the Hunters.

Given that her mother was killed by a wolf yokai and she’s now wearing a red cloak, it’s not a huge leap to guess the inspiration for this story. But I really like the feudal Japanese style they use. This may be a coming-of-age quest, but it’s certainly not a tired or boring one. Kani is already shaping up as a deep character; she shows spunk, but she also displays a great deal of love for her father.

I like where this story is going already. Kani is a strong lead but still has a lot to learn on her quest. And who knows – maybe we’ll get to see a little revenge?

AKANEIRO #1 is available now at your FLCS or by order at darkhorse.com.
