A Review: GRIMM FAIRY TALES: MYTHS & LEGENDS #19

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of GRIMM FAIRY TALES: MYTHS & LEGENDS #19 from Zenescope Entertainment. Troy Brownfield writes and Joyce Maureira draws.

Hank and Gina are monster hunters; they are seeking evidence of the supernatural. They do this because Gina saw something years ago when their home was destroyed. Now they’re checking out a place called the Witch’s Den, despite all of the warnings they’ve gotten from the locals. But are they ready for what they might find?

This is a modernized retelling of the Hansel and Gretel story of old. Hank and Gina are adults, they drive around in cars, they have smartphones. They also carry around a film crew and equipment like that we might see on supernatural hunting TV shows. The end of this issue teases that they will meet the witch next time, and I’m admittedly curious to see what they’ll do with her. Hank and Gina are both obviously haunted by their experiences (forgive the pun), and are likable enough that I want to follow them through the story.

This title appeals on multiple levels—we know the stories will be good, it’s fun to see modernized versions of them, and who doesn’t love a good spookfest?

GRIMM FAIRY TALES: MYTHS & LEGENDS #19 is available now at your FLCS or by order from zenescope.com.
