A Review: DOC SAVAGE: THE RING OF FIRE #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of DOC SAVAGE: THE RING OF FIRE #1 from Dynamite Entertainment. David Avallone writes, Dave Acosta draws, Morgan Hickman colors, and Taylor Esposito letters.

It’s 1938, and in Pat’s nightmare she sees her cousin die in flames before her friend Amelia Earhart saves her. This is made more odd by the fact that her cousin is Doc Savage. But he and his team have been called off to the Pacific to investigate the appearance of an uncharted volcano beneath a brand new US airbase. Doc tells Pat he’ll look for Amelia when he’s done, but Pat had an idea where to start.

Doc Savage has been a mainstay of adventure fiction for decades, and it’s really cool to see him get a brand new story in comics form here. This first issue gives us a glimpse at some cool gadgets, some high-flying fisticuffs, and that familiar old spirit of adventure. This story has plenty of mystery as well, and the art gives us a blend of great combat scenes and exprressive characters.

I’ve always believed that comics would be a wonderful medium for the pulp adventure that Doc Savage is best known for. And Dynamite has done well with some other examples of the genre. It’s going to be fun to see Doc back in action.

DOC SAVAGE: THE RING OF FIRE #1 is available now from your local comic shop, or online at dynamite.com.
