A Review: PATHFINDER GOBLINS! #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of PATHFINDER GOBLINS! #1 from Dynamite Entertainment. Adam Warren and Erik Mona write, and Carlos Gomez and Shane White draw.

This book presents us with two complete stories. The Warren story gives us a goblin warband which is obsessed with the magical artifact that they have “liberated” from a group of adventurers. Both greed and the influence of the intelligent item wreak havoc among the warband’s ranks, with no shortage of eyeball goo along the way. The Mona story gives us the epic tale of Gribbet, a goblin trapped in a world in which he never belonged. With the help of magic, he and his fellows do their best to survive.

I think the first thing we need to understand is that in the Pathfinder game, goblins are stupid and evil. This is much more obvious in the first story, of course, where the gobs do exactly what you’d expect of them. But in the second story we have a story of gobs actually improving themselves and acting much more evil than stupid. It’s an enjoyable twist to the concept, and it’s very well described in Gribbet’s narration of the story.

I really enjoyed both of these stories, for quite different reasons, of course. The writing is top-notch in both cases, and I believe this would make a very nice introduction for those who haven’t read much fantasy. Pick it up and share it with a friend.
