A Review: SKULLKICKERS #17

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of SKULLKICKERS #17 from Image Comics. Jim Zub writes and Edwin Huang draws.

It’s the end of the story arc, and the gang is engaged in mortal combat with the squid creature as well as the elements. The ship is sinking fast, and the kraken outside isn’t helping matters. Will they survive? What’s next for them? What’s the deal with their new sword?

The action is intense and the banter is witty in this book. These characters are obviously comfortable in the most horrendous situations, apparently having fun and cracking wise in the middle of a particularly dangerous occurrence. I also quite enjoyed the narration, which uses the same wry sense of humor. They even poke fun at the standard comic book sound effects. How can you not love that?

I will happily admit to some bias toward high fantasy, but even so, this book is a delightful read. Every genre needs some self-deprecation, and this title looks to be a good step in the right direction.

SKULLKICKERS #17 is available now at your FLCS or by order from imagecomics.com.
