A Review: KILL OR BE KILLED #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of KILL OR BE KILLED #1 from Image Comics. Ed Brubaker writes, Sean Phillips draws, and Elizabeth Breitweiser colors.

Dylan is a grad student who’s done a few dumb things in his life. Wasted some time, messed up some relationships, that sort of thing. But when he tried to kill himself, that’s when something strange happened. He failed, obviously, but that wasn’t the end of it. Now he’s out there killing bad people, and his reasons why are just outside of believable.

He’s a likeable character, really, despite the killing people thing. He’s a nice guy, almost to the point where it needs the air quotes. Smart enough for grad school, but unlucky and a little awkward otherwise. A regular dude with one hell of a twist, you might say. And this first issue gets that across very effectively. The art also helps add a bit of darkness and monotony to Dylan’s story; the library panel stands out for me, with all of those identical lampshades.

It’s really cool to see this team come into this story with a different angle. I can’t wait to see how far into the horror genre this goes, and it’s a badass story regardless. Go get this one.

KILL OR BE KILLED #1 is available now at your FLCS or at imagecomics.com.
