A Review: THE DARK #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of THE DARK #1 from Alterna Comics. Kelly Williams writes and draws.

Steve is a writer, and he’s looking for local legends and stories for the book he’s working on. So he’s gotten in contact with Karl, who has agreed to act as guide to the local woods, where there are rumors and legends about a witch who steals the skins of her victims. It’s just like any other normal camping trip for a while, but as it gets later, the woods get creepier and creepier.

As a fan of horror stories and horror comics, I find that short formats tend to work better than long form in terms of getting the best scare. Maybe it’s just easier to leave it to the reader’s imagination. This story runs about 10 pages, and it does a delightful job of getting us worked up and then slapping us with a quick reveal. The art uses a lot of black, and a lot of heavy lines, which adds a harshness or starkness to the story.

This is a wonderful little monster-in-the-dark story, the kind that can really freak you out if you let it. And that’s a good thing.

THE DARK #1 is available now on ComiXology or at alternacomics.com.
