A Review: SHAFT #2

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of SHAFT #2 from Dynamite Entertainment. The story is written and lettered by David F. Walker, illustrated by Bilquis Evely, and colored by Daniela Miwa. Shaft was created by Ernest Tidyman.

With his boxing career over and unsatisfied with going to college, John Shaft applies for a job with National Investigation and Security Service. He is hired on to be an undercover shopper to take down thieves. Stationed at Gimbles department store, he soon meets Arletha Havens and they start dating. Things are going well for Shaft, but things change…

The process of Shaft becoming the badass we know well from the movies and novels continues. David F. Walker crafts a solid story that gets readers who aren’t really familiar with the character involved without disrespecting the hardcore fans. I’ve seen Bilquis Evely’s art from the DOC SAVAGE series and loved it. The funny thing is I never noticed a M.D. Bright influence and it works amazingly well for this book. The fact that there is a SHAFT comic surprises me, but I would recommend it because it’s been an enjoyable read.

SHAFT #2 is in stores now, or available for ordering at www.dynamite.com.
