A Review: JOHN CARTER, WARLORD OF MARS #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of JOHN CARTER, WARLORD OF MARS #1 from Dynamite Entertainment. Ron Marz writes, Abhishek Malsuni draws and Nanjan Jamberi colors.

Dejah Thoris has been captured, and an alien invasion has overrun Helium. The battle rages on, but the enemy leader is very good at interrogation. Dejah has no choice but to divulge her secrets, but she also proves her faith in John Carter under duress. Carter has been drawn away to battle the invaders in the wastes, and he proves his skill yet again. He knows a trap has been set, but he doesn’t know yet who has set it.

The John Carter stories of Edgar Rice Burroughs are pulp fantasy at its finest (pulp is not a bad word in my book, and these stories are often underrated). They’re great tales of epic adventure on an alien world, with a relatable protagonist in extraordinary situations. This book captures the feel of the familiar characters, and I really like the bad guy so far. And the art is fabulous; the center spreads (of Dejah’s “confession”) are just beautifully drawn and colored.

I can’t imagine a better deal – an ongoing John Carter title written by a popular writer who loves the setting. Get it while it’s hot, folks.

JOHN CARTER, WARLORD OF MARS #1 is available now at your FLCS or at dynamite.com.
