A Review: LITTLE NEMO: RETURN TO SLUMBERLAND #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of LITTLE NEMO: RETURN TO SLUMBERLAND #1 from IDW Publishing. The story is by Eric Shanower, illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez, colors by Nelson Daniel, and lettering by Robbie Robbins. LITTLE NEMO is based off the classic Winsor McCay comic strip.

The Princess of Slumberland awaits her new playmate, but there is some confusion of just who it may be. An adviser named Snitikus enters with the name James Nemo Summerton. Believing he is the one, the King sends a servant named Popcorn to find James and bring him to Slumberland. James isn’t interested in being a playmate for the Princess and wakes up. The task is then assigned to Bon-Bon, the Candy Kid. Over the course of several nights, James dreams of Bon-Bon being in trouble. Will Nemo save him and enter Slumberland, or somehow move on?

I am not familiar with the story of Little Nemo, but it’s ok because it’s not necessary. Eric Shanower crafts a magical little tale here. Gabriel Rodriguez’s artwork is great as always; but combined with Nelson Daniel’s colors it’s nothing less than majestic.  This is a wonderful all-ages book that can’t be recommended enough.
