A Review: ARCANE SECRETS: THE CURSE OF THE MOTTLED TENTACLE #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of ARCANE SECRETS: THE CURSE OF THE MOTTLED TENTACLE #1 from Amigo Comics. Angel A. Svoboda writes and draws, and Rafael Nieves translates.

Doctor Ment and his assistant Harry are seekers of arcane artifacts and lore. Tamontti is a crime lord and Ment’s sworn enemy, and has developed a devious plan to get rid of Ment once and for all. But the good doctor knows his stuff, and he won’t be defeated so easily. He has friends who can help him, and he also finds some help in an unexpected, squid-like form.

The title tells of a curse, and that curse renders Ment susceptible to mental control (the shrubbery hairdo is merely a side effect); Ment must get rid of the curse before something bad can happen. A very serious story, to be sure, and it’s rife with Lovecraftian references and implications. But the strength of this story is its humor, of which it has plenty. Oh, and tentacles. Lots of those, too. If you’re into that kind of thing.

This issue is the beginning of a well-crafted comedy/horror story, which is not an easy thing to pull off. This one works – check it out.

ARCANE SECRETS: THE CURSE OF THE MOTTLED TENTACLE #1 is available now at your LCS or online at amigocomics.com.
