A Review: TRIO #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of TRIO #1 from IDW Publishing. The story and art is by John Byrne.

Trio is a group of heroes. The public know them as Rock, Paper, and Scissors, but they have other code names…a number (Paper is one, Scissors is two and Rock is three). Our heroes show up to take down a group of bank robbers armed with hi-tech weapons, but things do not go well. Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, a group of mermaids attack a ship, grabs the crew, and takes them underwater to die. Almost two weeks later, a merman calling himself Nautilus arrives and begins what seems to be an attack of the surface world.

I have enjoyed Byrne’s stuff from his days with Marvel and his Superman reboot back in the 1980s, but he's been hit or miss in my opinion since the mid 1990s. This issue reminds me of those days gone by, especially his stint on FANTASTIC FOUR. His writing is old school superhero comics …it’s that good. His art is the best he has done in a long time. Yes, it might be a little too cute to have heroes with code names of Rock, Paper, and Scissors, but this was a fun ride and I definitely want to see more.

TRIO #1 is in stores now and is available at www.idwpublishing.com.
