A Review: ATOMIC ROBO: REAL SCIENCE ADVENTURES #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of ATOMIC ROBO: REAL SCIENCE ADVENTURES #1 from Red 5 Comics. Brian Clevinger writes, Matt Speroni colors, Jeff Powell letters, and various artists contribute.

This book is a collection of serials and short stories based in the Atomic Robo universe. One story features Dr. Dinosaur, and another features an attempted ascension to godhood. And one of the serials is a World War II era superspy story. And there’s plenty more, of course.

Unsurprisingly, there are a lot of layers to this book. The most obvious is the ‘atomic horror’ flavor—it’s got a very strong basis in the styles of fiction and comics of the ‘40s and ‘50s. The art and design help to bring this out brilliantly. And that sense of large impending doom is balanced by a liberal dose of humor. Add to that the use of the serial format, where longer stories are presented in multiple parts, and Red 5 has put together a wonderful sampling of what they can do.

A lot of layers to this book, and they come together beautifully. This is a fun and exciting collection which can easily serve as an introduction to the world of Red 5 Comics.
