A Review: PATHFINDER SPECIAL #1 (2013)

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of PATHFINDER SPECIAL #1 (2013) from Dynamite Entertainment. Jim Zub writes, Kevin Stokes draws and Mohan colors.

The team has traveled to the city of Magnimar. It’s very late and they’ve gotten accommodations, but Merisiel just can’t manage to rest until she’s seen the sights. Dragging a very unwilling Kyra along with her, she makes the “adventurer in the city” rounds. And needless to say, they find adventure, along with a link to Meri’s past.

This special issue is entirely character driven, and it obviously focuses on Merisiel and Kyra. They’re in the beginning stages of a relationship, and they’re also dramatically different people (as evidenced by Meri’s night-owl ways and Kyra’s dawn-god priesthood). We learn some things about both characters in this book, and they learn about each other.

It’s really cool to see Zub handle the characters like this, in a way that he couldn’t get away with in the main title. I admit I’m a huge fan of his work, but even a non-fan would have to admit that this is really good writing. New reader or old, you won’t be disappointed.

PATHFINDER SPECIAL #1 (2013) is available now at your FLCS and online at dynamite.com.
