A Review: BETTY “THE SLAYER” MITCHELL #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of BETTY “THE SLAYER” MITCHELL #1 from Markosia Comics. Alex Giles writes and letters, Ka De Oki draws, and Tiko Capdevila colors.

Miss Elizabeth Mitchell has earned quite a reputation for herself as a monster hunter in Victorian England. She’s slain many, but the one who eluded her was her first, Spring-Heeled Jack. Now she’s been summoned to Aberdeen to look into a string of killings, and her old enemy Jack may be involved. Once that’s done, though, she’s off again to help an old friend in the States.

This is one very busy monster hunter, to be sure, which keeps the action coming nonstop. And she’s also breaking in an assistant, an eager young lad with some good instincts. The story moves quickly, and it does so with a central character who’s brave and intelligent. And the art handles all of the action admirably, and gives us some great background scenes as well.

Betty’s biggest strength is her confidence – she knows what she can do and she also knows how to handle people as well as monsters. She’s a great character, and this is issue 1 of 5, so we can look forward to much more from her in the coming months. Now’s the time to get on board.

BETTY “THE SLAYER” MITCHELL #1 is available now on ComiXology, or online at markosia.com.
