A Review: ASH VS THE ARMY OF DARKNESS #0

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of ASH VS THE ARMY OF DARKNESS #0 from Dynamite Entertainment. Chris Sims and Chad Bowers write, Mauro Vargas draws, Triona Farrell colors, and Tom Napolitano letters.

The story picks up right after the end of the Army of Darkness film. Ash has just blown away the deadite “customer” in Housewares, and has been summoned to the manager’s office. Killing customers, even soul-eating ones, is against S-Mart policy, so Ash gets fired. But then he gets a visitor at home offering him a job (kind of) in exchange for his help with the kind of problem he specializes in.

The Ash/Evil Dead stories are a lot of fun, especially if you like your horror with a liberal dose of comedy. And Dynamite has been doing them well since they picked up the license. This story is unusual in that it’s mostly in the “normal” world, but it’s also just a prelude to the ultimate in terror: high school. I like the premise, and the art shows us a few glimpses of the (very cool) darkness to come.

Zero issues are great, giving us a well-constructed preview of a bigger story for a reasonable price. There’s no reason not to go get this one.

ASH VS THE ARMY OF DARKNESS #0 is available now from your local comic shop, or online at dynamite.com.
