A Review: STAR TREK: BOLDLY GO #7

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of STAR TREK: BOLDLY GO #7 from IDW Publishing. The story is by Mike Johnson & Ryan Parrott. The art is by Megan Levens, colors by Sarah Stern, letters by AndWorld Design, and production design by Neil Uyetake.

Captain Kirk and the crew of the Endeavour have been sent to Babel to be a part of the conference between the Federation and the Romulan Empire to prepare for future visits from the Borg. The tension and mistrust is already running high when the Romulan Ambassador is murdered. But who is responsible and for what purpose? That’s what Kirk and company want to know…

Fans of classic Trek will quickly recognize this as a variation of the episode “Journey to Babel.” I find the parallel of Cadet Shev and his father (the Andorian Ambassador) with Spock and Sarek in that episode familiar, yet different (and intriguing). If you have been following the website, you know I have enjoyed Mike Johnson’s handling the Kelvin-verse in the comics; and he (with Ryan Parrott’s assistance) is still knocking it out of the park. I first encountered Megan Levens’ work in MADAME FRANKENSTEIN and loved it. She and Sarah Stern do some outstanding work in this issue; looks great. I’m curious to see how this mystery is resolve and how it will affect the ever-changing Trek lore.

STAR TREK: BOLDLY GO #7 is in stores now or available at www.idwpublishing.com.
