A Review: THE MAGDALENA #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of THE MAGDALENA #1 from Image Comics and Top Cow Productions. Tini Howard and Ryan Cady write, Christian DiBari draws, Mike Spicer colors, and Troy Peteri letters.

Maya is your average community college student. She’s bright, but she’s young, and she ditches church with her mom to hang out with her goth friends. There’s this guy she likes, but he’s gotten weird lately. When they meet at a club, he starts acting strange, like a junkie. They go to the local diner, and when he explodes in a cloud of flies, a strange woman with a spear comes out of nowhere. Maya grabs the spear, and it just feels right.

The Magdalena is back, and things are, well, complicated. But it wouldn’t be any fun otherwise, and that’s really what makes this a great first issue. There’s a bunch of questions, not many answers, and enough action to keep it interesting. And the art handles darkness and light to really cool effect.

The new Magdalena is rough and untrained, but she has potential. Patience will need to live up to her name in order to prepare Maya for what is coming. Get on board here at the beginning.

THE MAGDALENA #1 is available now from your local comic shop, or online at imagecomics.com.
