A Review: KARMA POLICE #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of KARMA POLICE #1 from Vault Comics. Chris Lewis writes, Tony Gregori draws, Jasen Smith colors, and Nic J. Shaw letters.

Jack is a young Buddhist monk in Los Angeles, and she’s believed to be the reincarnation of the order’s greatest warrior. She’s very good at the monk thing, but she’s also kind of a teenager. One of the monk leaders senses a great disturbance in Portland, so Jack and her teacher go to investigate. They find some strange happenings in the city’s best strip club, and the adventure starts rolling from there.

This story has a cool balance of mystery and monastery (one might say “kung fu meets SVU”). It also blends in some comedy, which lightens the mood enough to make dealing with the monsters a bit easier. There are plenty of story layers here, and the art does a nice job of shifting from the mundane to the magical and back again.

This is not the first story to contain adventuring monks, but there are quite a few original twists and turns in here to keep the reader interested. And lots of promise for more twists and turns. Check this one out.

KARMA POLICE #1 is available now from your local comic shop, or online at vaultcomics.com.
