A Review: MEMETIC #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of MEMETIC #1 from BOOM! Studios. James Tynion IV writes, Eryk Donovan draws and Adam Guzowski colors.

The so-called “Good Times Sloth” appeared across the internet at 7am, and at 7pm the incident began. Aaron and Marcus couldn’t see the sloth image (both have vision problems), but most of the rest of the country saw it. And now the country lies in ruins. Aaron the college student is just trying to make sense of it all. Marcus the former soldier is more concerned with stopping the effects, whatever they are.

Two things make this story cool for me. First, it shows how social media works in a very real and disturbing way. And second, it takes the seemingly harmless concept of a meme and shows how horrible it can be in the wrong hands. The art is really nice, especially in some of the tricks for giving the sloth its “screen time.”

This is a book that can both teach us something about our own society and also drive the conspiracy nuts crazy with its implications. What more could you want in a comic book? Definitely check this one out.

MEMETIC #1 is available now at your FLCS or at boom-studios.com.
