A Review: LIFE WITH ARCHIE #36

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of LIFE WITH ARCHIE #36 from Archie Comics. The story is by Paul Kupperberg, with pencils by Pat & Tim Kennedy, inks by Jim Amash, colors by Glenn Whitmore, and letters by Jack Morelli.

Things are buzzing in Riverdale with Senator Kevin Keller’s election and his plans to toughen gun control laws. The recent shooting at the Southport Mall (with gay employees being targeted) have not made things any easier. Archie is getting ready for the fundraiser for the victims of the shooting that night at the Chocklit Shoppe. He spends his time thinking about the future while reliving some old memories. That evening the fundraiser is in full swing when Senator Keller (with bodyguards) finally appears. What seems to be a somewhat happy occasion will end up in more tragedy…

Yes, this is the controversial “Death of Archie” story that made national news. Paul Kupperberg crafts a really nice story here, but knowing the ending ahead of time made it more melancholy. The art of Pat & Tim Kennedy help keep things more upbeat. Would it have been better NOT to have known that Archie dies? Maybe, maybe not.  The "death" of a character is cliche, gimmicky, and WAY overused. In this case it's the logical way for the series to end and it feels right. Archie fans will be proud of the way our hero goes out. One more issue and this look into our gang’s possible future will be over. It’s been an interesting ride.
