A Review: RISE OF THE MAGI #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of RISE OF THE MAGI #1 from Image Comics along with Top Cow Productions. Marc Silvestri writes, Sumeyye Kesgin and Silvestri draw, and Betsy Gonia colors.

Asa’s brother Raye guards the source of ultimate power in a quiet little fantasy world. When a traitor breaks off a piece of the source, Raye fights like mad to retrieve the piece. He gets the piece to Asa, who is tasked with keeping it safe, then sent through a portal. Where he will end up no one knows. Asa will have to grow up quickly in order to stay alive.

Asa is just a kid, a nobody who’s been thrust into a great adventure. This is, of course, a classic “epic fantasy” story plot. This issue moves quickly because of all the action, so we don’t get to know much about our characters, but it’s hard not to like the poor kid. And the glimpse we get of where he’s going is intriguing. And of course, the art is top notch.

This is an exciting beginning to what looks to be a fun epic story. And considering who’s involved, I think we can expect great things.

RISE OF THE MAGI #1 is available now at your FLCS or at imagecomics.com.
