A Review: DEJAH OF MARS #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of DEJAH OF MARS #1 from Dynamite Entertainment. The story is written by Mark Rahner, with art by Jethro Morales, colors by Salvatore Aiala Studios, and lettering by Marshall Dillon.

John Carter is missing…as well as one of Helium’s most sacred artifacts. The assumption is that Carter took it, but Dejah also found his blood and believes that he was kidnapped. Dejah disobeys her grandfather’s wishes and begins her quest to find her husband.  Carthoris, John and Dejah’s son, joins in the search. Several leads are explored, to no avail. Did John steal the artifact and just where is he? Who is the Red Reaper and does he play a part in this, or is someone close to our heroes behind this?

Over the course of several titles, Dynamite has turned Dejah Thoris from the “damsel in distress” into a strong, smart woman capable of leading her people. Writer Mark Rahner even mentions this in the story by having her remember the times John Carter saved her and now is the tables have turned. This is a really strong script by Rahner brought to life by the beautiful art of Jethro Morales and Salvatore Aiala Studios’ colors. Interested in seeing where things will go...
