A Review: CONAN THE AVENGER #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of CONAN THE AVENGER #1 from Dark Horse Comics. The story is by Fred Van Lente, with art by Brian Ching, colors by Michael Atiyeh, and lettering by Richard Starkings and Comicraft.

Conan finds himself in the city of Shumballa, drinking away the pain of recent events. Unfortunately, Shumballa has its own problems. Our hero cares not for what is going on around him until someone tempts fate and steals everything from him. Soon the entire town will learn what the consequences are for pissing off an already upset barbarian…

I’ve become a fan of Fred Van Lente’s work, so I was definitely interested seeing him handle our favorite Cimmerian on a regular basis. This first issue did not disappoint. While the issue shows him mourning his lost love oblivious to what’s going on around him, you know that it won’t be long before he fights again. Brian Ching’s art is striking; there is a different (yet cool) vibe with it compared to other artists that have handled Conan. This series bears watching.

CONAN THE AVENGER #1 is in stores now, or available for ordering at www.darkhorse.com.
