A Review: GATEWAY #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of GATEWAY #1 from IDW Publishing. Joe Halpin Sr. writes, Juanfrancisco Moyano draws, and Joe Halpin Jr. colors.

Jake is an undercover cop, and he gets caught in a deal gone bad. But that’s just the beginning of his problems. He wakes up in the street, and the cops he meets are acting strangely. What they tell him doesn’t make sense, and the town meeting they take him to doesn’t really help. Something weird is going on, and the cop in him can’t let it go.

Jake is also the sole narrator in this story, and he’s obviously not believing what he’s seeing. If there’s something supernatural about the place, he’s not buying it. But we are given some hints that say it is and some hints that are less clear. Enough to pique our interest without giving away the farm; good storytelling, in other words.

This is gritty storytelling in a world that we’re going to learn about slowly, along with Jake. It’s a strong start for what could prove to be a really cool world. Pick it up.

GATEWAY #1 is available now at your FLCS and online at idwpublishing.com.
