A Review: DAMSELS #1

The Fellowship was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of DAMSELS #1 from Dynamite Comics. Leah Moore and John Reppion write and Aneke draws.

Rapa is not having a good day. She’s in a strange city, and strange things keep happening to her. One might begin to think that she’s accident prone, or maybe that something is trying to draw her in. Meanwhile, the queens of Caumont and Perrault have met to discuss some economic issues when an apparently magical attack takes place in their presence.

At first glance it might seem suspicious how some of these characters look familiar. But the fairy-tale queens here are well beyond their original stories, and they are now established in their monarchies. And beyond that, the idea provides a framework for how the usual fantasy tropes can be used in this story. If nothing else, it will be fun to see how they choose to change the familiar characters.

Magic works, fairies are real, and there is definitely something going on in these two kingdoms. And I think it will be interesting to see what it’s all about.

DAMSELS #1 is available now at your FLCS or by order from dynamite.net.
